More Scrabble Tile Necklaces….

I am making all the relatives necklaces ….SHHH, don't tell them.  (Well, all the girl relatives, that is.)

1. Start with scrabble tiles.

2. Grab fun paper. Anything works,  I have so much scrap paper around its great to find a cute use for all the bits and pieces.

3. For these,  I decided I liked the initials and the dice looked like it might be kind of fun.  I like how the paper is kind of antiqued already.  First thing to do is cut out the little square of paper the size and shape of your tile and Mod Podge it on.  Push out and air bubbles and smooth down.   Let dry.

4.  Here they all are glued and dried.

5.  The next step is the antique the edges.  I use brown stamping ink. I do the edges of the paper and the tile.  I just like it that way.  But another great thing about making your own jewelry is that you can do what you want, any way you want it.

6.  This is the only “scary” part- the resin. Bum-bum-baaa. It is actually pretty painless  and after you do it once, it’s easy peasy.  Get in a room with lots of ventilation, open a window and turn on a fan because this stuff is a bit on the stinky side.   I wait until I have several necklaces and do the resin all at one time.

7. You just mix equal parts of each of the bottles into a cup.  Mix it really well until it is all incorporated.

8.  Put the glued tiles onto wax paper and on a plate or something. ( here we have a Finding Nemo plastic plate that has seen better days and now is in the craft room)
Then you just put a small amount of the resin on the top of the tile. You can see here the “m” is plain, the “k” has just started to be covered in resin and the dice is all covered.   Just put  on in small drops, you can always add more, so start small.  Once the face of the tile is covered, breathe on it.  And not the breath like you are cooling down soup; but like the “ha” breath like your checking to see if your breath smells like the garlic fries you had at lunch.
Don't worry if it runs over.  I mean, the goal is to have it not run over the edges; but it can be fixed if it does.  This is supposed to be fun..so don't sweat the small things.  ( I think I read that somewhere..LOL)

9. Wait.  This needs to dry/ cure for at least two days.  The longer the better actually.
10. Here is a letter that I totally dripped all over the place.   But we can fix it.  We have the technology.

11. After the tiles have all dried, clean up any rough spots with this handy dandy thing-a-ma-bob.  Just clip off any excess goo.   I also lightly sand down any to the leftover that is too small to snip.  And if needed, I  will go back over again with the brown stain.   Again, the goal is to not have excess goo; but goo  happens.  Roll with it.

12. All snipped off and sanded down and you cant even tell.  Next step is to glue on the jump ring thingy.   You can find these most any hobby or craft stores.  These I got at Wal-Mart- a pack of 12 for like $2.00.

13. I just use a bit of super glue or Gorilla glue and put a little dab on the back of the tile and a little bit on the loop and hold till it sticks.  Now I let these sit for a bit here too.  Give the glue plenty of time to dry.

14. Last step is to just find a cute chain, ribbon or rope  to run through the ring and boom- your cute and styling necklace is done.  This cute faux suede  I found at Wal-Mart, the chain is an old chain that I am reusing here.  ( shh, don't tell my sister)

Really cute! Didn't know how these were made. Is the resin sold at craft stores?

My favorite Christmas gift this past year was a Scrabble necklace that had been from my grandmother's Scrabble set! I didn't know how to make my own — and now I do. Lovely! Thanks for the tutorial.
